A village in the Northern Spanish Province Asturias, under the administration of the community of Llanes, a touristic centre with a harbour. Its population is as warm as its climate.
Only three kilometers from the sea, it nestles at the foot of the mountains. Porrúa is situated on the hang of one of the most beautiful mountains of Europe called the Picos de Europa.
After leaving the main road which borders the coast, to reach the town of Porrùa, the first thing that attracts the visitor's attention is the bolera, the covered bowling ground where the inhabitants of the village play bowling.
A quick look at the beautiful circular tree-lined square allows you to see the pastures in the mountains and the many farms that cling to them.
Porrùa is a long, mainly agricultural village with dairy cows and meat cows. A cow's milk cheese from Porrùa is very renowned. But one can not evoke Porrùa without thinking of the sound of the gaita, the bagpipes of the asturias, bagpipes with bourdon, accompanied by a drum, dances the perichote inhabitants of the village.
In Porrúa live 400 people and the music school of the village (!) has 80 pupils that study mostly the pipes or drums. That tells a lot about the power of this village where the people are dependant of cows and cheese.
The Celebrations of Porrùa
The celebrations of Porrùa are very famous, they take place the first Saturday of the month of August: all the population, the musicians and the dancers meet there and drink the cider shed by the escanciadores, pulled from a large barrel, installed for the occasion on the village square.
